As a young teenager, I found a camera in a closet and that’s what got me started. I did my own darkroom work, school photographer, weddings etc. I just loved it, spent all my time doing it…almost made a career out of it. Now for the rest of the story!
Many years have passed and in between then and now I went to college and then on to professional school and became an Optometrist. In my junior year of Optometry school, it was discovered that I had the early stages of a disabling eye disease for which there is no cure. I was able to practice Optometry for three years before having to give up my profession. Of course photography was out of the question. I couldn’t see well enough to focus and couldn’t work in a darkroom etc. That was about 30 years ago. And then a revolution began…. digital photography became not only acceptable with regards to image quality, but also affordable. I ebay’d my darkroom equipment, all my old Nikon film gear and earned enough to get my first digital camera. It was great….Auto Focus took care of that issue, my computer with large monitor is my darkroom and I can again enjoy creating photographic art.
I’m legally blind in my right eye and my left eye is trying it’s best to get there too but for now I can take pictures. Much of photography really is more about composition, lighting, and a ‘feeling’ …and I can still see well enough for that. Being visually impaired only slows me down some….a magnifying glass helps me with camera settings. I really don’t know how long I will be able to continue with photography this second time around, but for the moment, I feel blessed to be able to do this. God is good!
